Sierra Leone gets new Chief of Defense Staff

By Abdul Hassan Fackie,
Freetown, Sierra Leone.

Major General Sullay Ibrahim Sesay, former Joint Force Commander of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) was on the evening of Wednesday, 17th June, 2020 appointed by His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio as Sierra Leone’s new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), replacing Lieutenant General Brima Sesay.

His appointment has been classed by many as a clear show of President Bio’s dedication to fight against tribalism and regionalism.

“Many people would have expected that the northern former CDS chief would have been replaced with a south easterner but President Bio’s commitment to fight tribalism and regionalism across all sectors in Sierra Leone, saw the appointment of one northerner to replace another northerner,” has been the general conclusion of large majority of Sierra Leoneans.

The outgoing CDS, Lt. Gen. Brima Sesay was born on 4th June 1965 in Musaia, Folosaba Dembelia Chiefdom, Koinadugu District in the Northern Region of Sierra Leone, while the new
CDS, Major General Sullay Ibrahim Sesay was born on 8th February 1969 in Maron village, Safrokoh Chiefdom, Port Loko District, now Karene District in the Northern Region of Sierra Leone.

In later years while in the Military he proceeded to Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone from 2005 to 2009 and graduated with a Bachelor of Social Science (Bsc) Honours in Economics. He attained a  Master in International Affairs and Strategic Studies at the National Defense University, Kaduna, Nigeria, 2010/2011 and Master in Military Science in China in 2014 to 2015.
