Controversy Engulfs Miss Sierra Leone 2018 Winner

By Abdul Hassan Fackie,
Freetown, Sierra Leone.

The just concluded Miss Sierra Leone 2018, held at the prestigious Bintumani Hotel in Freetown, on Saturday August 25, 2018, has been embroiled in controversy with accusations that the contest was politicised to give the Miss Sarah Laura Tucker from Bonthe District the crown.

Mr. Haroun Zubairu, father of one of the contestants, Miss Danita Zubairu, representing the Western Area, has referred to the victory of Miss Sarah Laura Tucker as being a politically, tribally and regionally influenced victory as she comes from the same district as President Julius Maada Bio.

He explained that three days before the contest he got information that the First Lady, Mrs. Fatima Jabbie Bio (aka Fatima Gucci), was working in collaboration with the Chief Judge, Miss Vicky Remoe, to influence other judges and make Miss Sarah Laura Tucker win the contest.

Mr. Zubairu said he was very confident that had the contest being fairly graded by the judges, his daughter would have taken the crown.

In an interview with Miss Vicky Remoe, she said the contest was free, fair and credible.

Ms. Remoe explained that she neither worked with Mrs. Fatima Jabbie Bio to influence the other judges nor did she influence the other judges in any way for them to make Miss Sarah Laura Tucker win.

She pointed out that she has a clear conscience that Miss Sarah Laura Tucker won the contest fairly based on merit and not in political, tribal or regional considerations.

Speaking to 40 Acres Canada, an Aide to the First Lady said Mrs. Fatima Jabbie Bio had nothing to do with the outcome of the beauty contest. He stressed that the results that were announced were a true representation of the unbiased judgement of the judges. He noted that the contest was not a political battle but that the main opposition All Peoples Congress (APC) was only looking for trying to give the ruling Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) a bad name and point political points.

When 40 Acres Canada managed to make contact with Miss Sarah Laura Tucker, she said that she won the contest fairly based on merit. She stated that of all the sixteen contestants she was the most beautiful, most articulate and most confident. She described herself as frivolous and jealous that a country girl like her from one of the smallest districts and a minority tribe, Sherbro, could win such a high profile beauty contest.

The Miss Sierra Leone contest was organised by the Sierra Leone Women Board and had contestants from the sixteen districts in the country.
